The Dils

Vinyl Mine's discussion of the Weirdos has whet my appetite for some early California punk: The Dils

The Dils - I Hate The Rich.mp3
The Dils - You're Not Blank.mp3
This is but one piece of the small body of work that the Dils would leave in their legacy. Above you'll find the A & B sides from the Dils 1977 classic first single. Fast, politically motivated songs highlighted by a dangerous guitar sound. It doesn't really get much better than this, though their second single (198 Seconds of the Dils) comes pretty close. One last single in 1980 (Made in Canada) came just as the band was dissolving. After the demise the brothers Kinman moved to Texas and stylistically shifted into country mode with Rank&File and later Blackbird.

Luckily, the Dils recorded material has been resurrected in various forms. Dils Dils Dils has the studio tracks and Class War has a live set. I was able to hear their songs initially on the What? Stuff compilation. That comp had the Dils doing an amazing live version of the VU song "What Goes On". A must listen (even at 9+ minutes)
